Identity, is something integral to our make up, our identity affects us psychologically, socially and ethically. The demons we battle daily to lay hold of our characteristics as human, the things we do to separate ourselves from the classification of lower animals and which yet rank us as such.
I use stories, poetry, music and film to explore what identity is to me as an artiste and my place in society. How within one person, different faces lurk and yet the person functions as normal but is a different creature at different times. I suspect that artistes are these kinds of creatures. I’m exploring what our identity are based on, what shakes them, shapes them, changes them.
Identities as children, parents, men, women, writers, believers, lovers, how we confront the conflict within when change happens around, how we process the change as we go through it. How we grow, fall, fail and rise again.
My work seeks constantly find room to breed, breathe and expand. Being an artiste is being possessed daily, the mind churns, finding creative pieces in the mundane. I want to leave my mark on the world even for a short while. To let it be known that once Abi was. I believe in every artiste, there is the desire to be remembered beyond our years. I am an artiste.
